hanamichi design

gardens and ponds in the japanese spirit

My work comes from an immersion in Japanese garden design principles, applied sensitively to the needs and interests of my clients and the potential offered by each site. Rather than trying to recreate Japanese gardens in a foreign context, I am interested in channeling an intimate knowledge of Japan’s garden tradition into designs that are Japanese in spirit and essence.

The pages of this web site combine photos of my work, thoughts about Japanese garden design, some nice haiku, and photographic details from gardens I have designed and made.

I welcome inquiries about prospective garden design projects. John Farrell, Owner

Welcome

Central to the philosophy of hanamichi design is a desire to:

  1. create spaces that are elegant and present in all four seasons

  2. distill images and feelings of wilderness into garden contexts

  3. communicate a sense of serenity

  4. integrate indoor and outdoor environments
